The Cameron Highlands is a 712-km² highland region 150 km north of Kuala Lumpur, at 1,500 m elevation, the most-British-feeling part of Malaysia. The region was developed by the British in the 1920s-30s for tea cultivation (the cool climate, the rainfall, the soil), and the colonial-era tea bungalows, the colonial gardens, the colonial-style buildings are still standing.

The population is 38,000, the most-photographed: the BOH Tea Centre (the most-visited tea plantation in Malaysia), the Sungai Palas Plantation (the most-photographed), the strawberry farms, the butterfly gardens, the mossy forests, the waterfalls. The temperature is 15-25°C year-round, the only place in Malaysia where you need a jacket.

BOH Tea Centre + Sungai Palas Plantation

The most-visited tea plantation in Malaysia, the most-photographed. The BOH Tea Centre (the original, 1929, the most-photographed) has the factory tour, the tea tasting, the view of the plantation. Strawberry farms

The Cameron Highlands is the most-photographed strawberry-farming region in Malaysia. Mossy Forest

From Kuala Lumpur: 3-4 hours by bus, 3 hours by car. The most common day trip or overnight from KL.

From Penang: 4-5 hours by bus, 3.5 hours by car. The most direct route from Penang.
