Krabi: The Limestone Karst Coast That Didn't Get Over-Touristy
The province across the bay from Phuket, with the same dramatic limestone karst landscape but 30% fewer tourists, the rock-climbing capital of Asia, the mangrove kayaking, the most-photographed beach in Thailand (Railay), and the most authentic island life in the south.

Krabi is the province across the bay from Phuket, on the Andaman coast, with the same limestone karst landscape but a different atmosphere. Where Phuket developed into a 5-million-visitors-a-year package destination, Krabi stayed a working province of fishing villages, mangrove canals, and the most-photographed rock-climbing destination in Asia.
The landscape is the headline: the limestone karst formations that rise straight up from the sea and the mangrove estuaries, the 130+ islands off the coast, the hidden lagoons accessible only by kayak, the rock-climbing walls of Railay. The atmosphere is the second headline: the slow pace, the local food, the family-run guesthouses, the lack of mega-resorts (mostly).
What to do
Railay Beach (the must-see)
The Railay peninsula, accessible only by longtail boat (15 minutes from Ao Nang). Four beaches (Railay West, Railay East, Phra Nang, Tonsai), the limestone cliffs that made the area famous for rock climbing, the Phra Nang Cave (the princess cave, the fertility shrine), the most-photographed beach in southern Thailand. The peninsula is small โ you can walk end to end in 30 minutes โ but the atmosphere is unique. Stay here 2-3 nights if you can.
Rock climbing
Railay is the rock-climbing capital of Asia. 700+ bolted routes on the limestone, the most famous walls (Phra Nang, Tonsai, Railay West), the most experienced climbers in Thailand, the easiest beginner routes in the world. The climbing schools (Basecamp Tonsai, Railay Adventure, King Climbers) are the most professional. A half-day beginner course is 1,500-2,500 THB, including gear, instruction, and 3-4 climbs.
The four-island tour (the day trip)
The classic Krabi day trip: longtail boat to four islands off the coast (Koh Tup, Koh Chicken, Koh Poda, Phra Nang Beach), with snorkeling, swimming, and a beach lunch. $20-30, 5-6 hours, the boats leave from Ao Nang or Railay. The most popular tourist activity in the area.
Other islands
- Koh Hong: The 1-hour boat from Ao Nang, the lagoon in the middle of the island, the snorkeling. The most-photographed island in Krabi.
- Koh Lanta: The larger island south of Krabi, the long beaches, the laid-back atmosphere, the diving. 1.5 hours by road + ferry from Krabi Town.
- Koh Phi Phi: The famous islands, the 2-hour boat trip from Krabi, the day trip. The Phi Phi Don is the backpacker island, the Maya Bay (closed since 2018) is the most-photographed.
- Koh Jum: The small quiet island, the local life, the most authentic in the area.
The mangroves + kayak
Krabi has the most extensive mangrove forests in southern Thailand, and the kayak tours through the canals are excellent. The most famous is the Ao Thalane kayak tour (half-day, 800-1,500 THB), the kayak through the limestone canyons at low tide. The most beautiful kayak trip in southern Thailand.
The hot springs + emerald pool
The natural hot springs in the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, 70 km from Krabi Town. The Emerald Pool (the Sa Morakot) is the blue-green natural pool in the middle of the jungle. Combine both in a day trip. $5-10 entry, plus transport.
The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)
The Buddhist temple in a cave 15 minutes from Krabi Town. The 1,237-step climb to the summit is the most-photographed in the area, the view is the best in the province, the Buddha footprint at the top is the most sacred. Free. Go at sunrise (5:30 a.m.) to avoid the heat and the crowds.
When to go
November to March: The best months. Dry, calm, 25-32ยฐC. The peak season.
