📜 History

Prambanan was built in the mid-9th century, possibly by Rakai Pikatan of the Mataram Kingdom. It is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and one of the tallest ancient structures in the Southern Hemisphere. The temple complex fell into ruin after a major earthquake around the 10th century and was hidden by jungle and shifting political power.

It was rediscovered by CA Lons in 1733. Restoration was first attempted by the Dutch in 1918, then abandoned. Major reconstruction began in 1953 after independence, with most of the main temples rebuilt by 1993. UNESCO listed the site in 1991.

✨ The story behind

Local folklore explains why Prambanan stands empty most of the year: a princess named Roro Jonggrang was tricked into marrying a powerful prince who had helped her father defeat a rival. To escape the marriage she set him an impossible task — building 1,000 temples in a single night. As the prince neared completion with the help of spirits, she tricked the village into lighting fires and banging rice mortars, making the spirits think dawn had come. In rage the prince cursed her into stone — she is said to be the statue of Durga in the main shrine, still waiting to be freed.

🏛️ Cultural significance

Prambanan marks the cultural high point of Hindu Java before Islam became dominant. The three main temples honour the Trimurti: Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer. The temple is still the centre of Javanese Hindu identity, and the annual Sendratari Ramayana ballet is performed here against the illuminated spires.

⭐ Fun fact

"The main Shiva temple rises 47 metres (154 feet) — taller than any other 9th-century structure south of Thailand. The temple's shadow at certain times of year forms a phantom fifth spire."
