Phuket: The Complete 5-Day Guide (Old Town, Beaches, Day Trips, Diving)
How to spend 5 days in Phuket without falling into the package-tour trap
By Ketut Sari · 6 min read
Phuket is one of the most-misunderstood destinations in Thailand. The package-tour version is the beaches-and-bars of Patong; the polished version is the Skytrain-free sprawl of resorts; the local version is the Sino-Portuguese old town and the island's working life. This is a 5-day plan that focuses on the latter.
Day 1: The Old Town, the Sino-Portuguese architecture, the food
9:00 a.m. — Thalang Road (the most beautiful street)
The 100-year-old Sino-Portuguese architecture is the most-photographed in Thailand. The shophouses are now cafes, boutique hotels, and small museums. Walk the entire 1-km length, stop at the coffee shops, eat the local food.
11:00 a.m. — Phuket Thai Hua Museum
The 1934-built Chinese school, now a museum on the Phuket history, the Chinese-Thai culture, the tin-mining boom. 200 THB entry. 1 hour.
12:00 p.m. — Lunch in the Old Town
Try the Peranakan food (the Hokkien-Chinese-Malay fusion): the Hokkien noodles (the most famous in Thailand), the O-Aew dessert, the moo hong (the braised pork belly), the Mee Hokkien. One Chun and Blue Elephant Phuket are the most famous.
2:00 p.m. — Sunday Walking Street (if it's Sunday)
Every Sunday 4-10 p.m., Thalang and parts of the Old Town are pedestrianized. The food, the craft, the most atmospheric evening in the Old Town.
4:00 p.m. — Sino-Portuguese Architecture Walk
Walk from Thalang Road to Soi Romanee (the most photogenic alley), then to the Shrine of the Serene Light, then to the Phuket Philatelic Museum. The most Instagram-able corner is the intersection of Thalang + Phang Nga + Krabi.
7:00 p.m. — Dinner at Tu Kab Khao
The Phuket-Thai food in a 100-year-old shophouse, the most atmospheric. The moo hong, the Hokkien noodles, the Phuket-style crab curry. 300-500 THB per person.
Day 2: The beaches, the viewpoints, the sunset
8:00 a.m. — Big Buddha (the most-photographed)
15 minutes from the Old Town. The 45-m white-marble Buddha on the hill, the most sacred site on the island. Free. 1 hour.
9:30 a.m. — Promthep Cape (the southernmost point)
10 minutes from Big Buddha. The most-photographed sunset point on the island. Best at sunrise (less crowded) but worth seeing in the morning for the view.
10:30 a.m. — Nai Harn Beach (the most beautiful)
5 minutes from Promthep Cape. The local beach, the least developed, the most beautiful. 1-2 hours to swim, walk, eat the seafood at the beach shacks.
12:30 p.m. — Lunch at the Nai Harn Beach shacks
The seafood lunch at the beach shacks is the most authentic in Phuket. The grilled fish, the morning glory, the tom yum. $5-10 per person.
2:30 p.m. — Karon Viewpoint (the "Three Beaches" view)
10 minutes from Nai Harn. The view of Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon beaches. The most-photographed in the area.
4:00 p.m. — Kata or Karon Beach (the family-friendly swim)
Pick one. Karon is the longer, more developed. Kata is the smaller, more photogenic. The swimming is fine, the restaurants are on the beach. 1-2 hours.
7:00 p.m. — Sunset at Promthep Cape (return)
Back to Promthep for the sunset. The view of the Andaman from the southernmost point, the most-photographed sunset on the island. 1-2 hours.
Day 3: The day trip — Phi Phi or Phang Nga
Option A: Phi Phi Islands (the famous one)
2-hour boat trip from Chalong Pier, the most famous day trip in southern Thailand. The Phi Phi Don (the backpacker island), the Maya Bay (closed since 2018, the viewpoint is open), the snorkeling at Bamboo Island, the Viking Cave. The day trip is rushed; the liveaboard is the way. $30-50 day trip, $150-300 overnight.
Option B: Phang Nga Bay (the James Bond one)
1-hour boat trip from Phuket, the limestone karst landscape that was in "The Man with the Golden Gun." The canoeing through the caves, the floating village, the Hong Island. The day trip is the most scenic. $40-60.
Option C: Similan Islands (the diving one)
2.5-hour boat trip from Phuket, open November-May only, the world-class diving. The day trip is rushed; the liveaboard is the way. $80-150 day trip, $400-800 liveaboard 2-3 days.
Day 4: The wellness, the cooking class, the spa
9:00 a.m. — Thai cooking class
Phuket has dozens of cooking schools, the most famous being Pum and Phuket Thai Cookery School. Market tour + hands-on cooking + 4-5 dishes + lunch. $30-60. 4 hours.
2:00 p.m. — Spa treatment
Phuket is the spa capital of southern Thailand. The most famous: The Baray Spa, the COMO Shambhala, the Banyan Tree Spa. 2-3 hours for a body treatment + facial.
5:00 p.m. — Sunset + cocktails at Surin
Surin Beach is the most exclusive, the most beautiful. The Aman, the Twinpalms, the Catch Beach Club. The cocktails at sunset are the most-photographed in Phuket.
7:00 p.m. — Dinner at the Catch Beach Club
The most famous beachfront restaurant in Phuket, the most-photographed. The seafood, the sushi, the cocktails. $50-100 per person.
Day 5: The boat + the island, or a slow day
Option A: Koh Lanta day trip
The island 70 km south, 1.5 hours by road + ferry. The long beaches, the laid-back atmosphere. Day trip is rushed; 1-2 nights is better. Ferry from Phuket to Koh Lanta is 2 hours, $20-30.
Option B: Local island day (Coral Island, Racha Island)
Coral Island (15 minutes from Phuket) for the snorkeling and the banana boat. Racha Island (45 minutes) for the better snorkeling and the more beautiful. $30-60 day trip.
Option C: Slow day at Kata or Karon
Beach time, pool time, massage, repeat. The Phuket experience when you don't want to do anything.
