Java overland by train
Yogyakarta, Bromo, Ijen, Borobudur, and the cultural heart of Indonesia — all reachable by train.
The classic route
Jakarta → Bandung (3h) → Yogyakarta (7h) → Solo (1h) → Malang (overnight) → Bromo (jeep) → Ijen (ferry to Bali). Or reverse. 10-14 days is ideal.
Yogyakarta essentials
Borobudur (sunrise is overrated, sunset is better). Prambanan (Hindu temple complex). Kraton (Sultan's palace). Malioboro Street (souvenirs). The Ramayana ballet at Prambanan (Tue, Thu, Sat).
Bromo
Active volcano in a sea of sand. Sunrise from King Kong Hill or the crater rim. Jeep tours from Cemoro Lawang. Bring a jacket — it's cold before sunrise.
Ijen
Blue fire phenomenon (only visible pre-dawn, hardest hike in Indonesia). Sulfur miners carrying 80kg loads. Harder than Bromo. Combine with Bromo over 2-3 days.
Train tickets
Book via tiket.com or the KAI app. Economy is fine for short hops. Executive for overnight (Jakarta-Surabaya). Book 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends.
