Nasi Kuning
Nasi Kuning
The recipe
Nasi Kuning is the celebratory yellow rice of Indonesia — rice cooked in coconut milk and turmeric, served at weddings, birthdays, and religious ceremonies. The yellow color comes from turmeric, which also gives the rice an earthy, slightly bitter undertone; the coconut milk adds richness; and the rice is steamed, not boiled, which gives it a fluffy, separate-grain texture. Nasi Kuning is typically served in a cone (tumpeng) for major celebrations, surrounded by side dishes: shredded chicken, egg, tempe orek, sambal goreng, kering tempe, and crackers. The cone shape is symbolic — it represents the mountain (Mahameru) and the relationship between humans and the divine.

💡 Tips from the kitchen
- ·The turmeric is non-negotiable — it's the color, the flavor, and the symbolism.
- ·Coconut milk gives richness. Use full fat.
- ·Nasi Kuning is best the day it's made. Reheating dries the rice.
