The most valuable real estate in history
The Banda Islands were the world's only source of nutmeg and mace until 1770. A single nutmeg was worth more than a day's wages for a European worker. The Dutch East India Company funded its entire Asian operation on the Banda trade.
The forts that started globalisation
Fort Belgica (1611) and Fort Nassau (1609) are the stone-and-cannon architecture of the original corporate monopoly. They are still standing. They are still free to visit. The 1621 Bandanese massacre is one of the first corporate genocides of the colonial era.
Manhattan's evil twin
Run Island — 3 km long, 1 km wide, population 2,000 — was traded for Manhattan in 1667. The Dutch thought they got the better deal. They were right at the time. They were catastrophically wrong in hindsight. The trade is one of the most extraordinary real estate stories in history.
An active volcano you can climb
Gunung Api is a 656m active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1988, wiping out Banda Neira. The climb is 3-4 hours up, 2 hours down, on loose volcanic scree. The summit crater is still steaming. Most visitors to Indonesia never even know this volcano exists.

When to go
March to May and September to November. Calm seas, no wind season, the fast boat and dive operators are running. Avoid June to August — the east wind halts all sea transport and the fast boat doesn't run at all.
How to get there
Fly into Ambon (AMQ) first. From Ambon, three options: a 12-seat propeller plane to Banda Neira (50 min, 500,000-900,000 IDR, 2-3 flights per week, weather permitting), a fast boat from Tulehu (6-7 hours, 300,000 IDR, twice weekly except June-August), or a PELNI ship (12+ hours, 100,000-150,000 IDR, every two weeks).
What it costs
Mid-range 4 days: USD 300-500 per person, including all transport, accommodation, food. Backpacker: USD 200-300. The plane ticket from Ambon is the most variable cost — anywhere from 500,000 to 1,800,000 IDR each way depending on carrier and advance booking.
What to bring
Reef-safe sunscreen. Reef shoes. Proper hiking boots if climbing the volcano (loose volcanic scree — trainers won't work). Enough cash — 1-2 ATMs in Banda Neira, often empty on weekends, none on the outer islands. Offline maps. Seasickness pills if taking the fast boat. A torch. A small ziplock bag for fresh nutmeg.
Connectivity
Cell signal works in Banda Neira town (Telkomsel is best). Dies completely on Run, Ai, and Hatta. There is one hotel with WiFi and it is slow. Treat Banda as offline. Tell your family you will be unreachable.
Safety & respect
Safety grade A. The volcano is the main hazard — listen to your guide, do not climb without a permit from the police station. The local community is mixed Muslim-Christian; modest dress outside the beach. The 1621 massacre is part of the local memory; ask before photographing people, and listen if they want to tell you the story.
